Why acupuncture
Acupuncture supports the whole person, the underlying root cause as well as presenting symptoms, and stimulates the body's own healing process.
In the Classical Chinese Medicine lineage, the quest to heal means remembering who we are, why we are here and what truly touches our heart.
Through re-connection to our inner self and to all that is around us, we can rekindle the passion and experience the benefits of life with our inner resources.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture involves stimulating body walls like skin & muscle to produce a therapeutic effect. It can be used for a wide range of conditions, acute pain, chronic pain, respiratory conditions, skin problems, gastric problems, stress, sleep problems, menstrual problems and many more.
If you picture your body as a city. In this city, there are motorways, big roads, there are streets and small lanes. If everything is fine, the traffic flows nicely. When a car breaks down, the traffic jams up. If the broken car is not fixed, the traffic jam will become worse and worse.
In the body there are meridians, and in these meridians we have Qi flow, energy flow. So for instance, if you hurt your lower back, the local muscle will become very tight. This kind of tightness indicates the blockage of qi flow. To fix the problem, we put needles into the local area, to help the broken car in a way. We also put needles at other parts of the body to direct the traffic and to restore qi flow.
Each time we needle an Acupuncture point, not only it has an effect on our body but its spirit also touches our soul, its healing power infiltrates the cells within our body, the thoughts in our mind and the source of our spirit.

"I originally chose acupuncture to help with the complex causes of acute and frequent migraine and I have now been migraine-free for a while. Going to Mary’s treatment session is like finding an oasis. It’s where I am understood to the core of my being. My talents are acknowledged. I feel validated as we unveil the truth. I am so happy to know her."

“I first went to Mary with menopausal symptoms, not being able to take HRT, and having had acupuncture before I was hopeful this alternative therapy might help ease my issues.
What I didn’t expect was the full benefit of the holistic treatment Mary offers. It goes way beyond acupuncture – Mary is articulate, warm and very kind in her approach to healing the full self.
I look forward to each session I have with her, it’s so relaxing and beneficial, I’m so glad I found her as someone who offers such a unique approach to healing.”

"I have been seeing Mary since 2019. I don’t pretend to understand how acupuncture really works, but what I can tell you is that seeing Mary on a regular basis has benefited me in countless ways, not least calming down an overactive mind and body.
I put complete trust in Mary and always leave my acupuncture sessions feeling more relaxed and positive.
Give Mary’s acupuncture a try even if, like me, you don’t really understand how it all works. Put your trust in Mary and her exceptional skills - you won’t regret it.
And by the way - you won’t feel the needles, so don’t worry about that."

"Mary is magical! I went to her to treat back pain, but as soon as she felt my pulse, Mary told me that it was my broken heart and grief that was affecting me. It was so true. I had lost my younger sister six weeks before I saw Mary. With the first treatment, I was able to really start grieving my sister's death, instead of continuing in disbelief and to begin to celebrate her as soul - and my back pain went away! Mary has a wealth of knowledge about the body, the soul and the heart, all rooted in her Classical Chinese Medicine training. But, I think, it is her innate ability to listen, to piece together the puzzle and to use her skills and intuition to heal that is so special. I think LP's review said it so well, Mary's intuition and knowing are astounding."

"My treatments with Mary are an absolute must in my life. I have been going to Mary since 2017. Not only is she an extraordinary and intuitive acupuncturist (the healing and shifting has been nothing short of magical), she incorporates other healing tools (from her Classical Chinese Medicine lineage) into the sessions. Tuning forks, moxa (moxibustion), crystals, colour & light therapy, vibrational healing, and essences of different kinds.
But to be perfectly honest, and as many of her clients say, it is Mary herself who is deeply healing. Her intuition and knowing is phenomenal. Often reflecting or treating parts of me I haven’t even verbalised. Amongst us there are many who simply name her Magic Mary.
Watching her grow and develop, and being lucky enough to experience her ever growing palate, has been one of the great privileges of my life. I never want her to leave!"

"I could not recommend Mary more - Mary and her 5 Elements Acupuncture was one of the primary reasons that I was able to re-connect with my body and find the essence of who I was.
Mary helped me to re-establish a relationship with myself and I cannot thank her enough for her support. She is just wonderful."

"Thank you for the treatments you provide they are highly beneficial and have assisted in my wellbeing. This is what is in my heart:
Our bodies are like cars, and inside the car sits our Soul and we are driving around all day long collecting and dropping off toxins.
Treating the body with love and respect, like you would a best friend, will balance your mind, body and soul to
be at its best for work, rest and play.Mary's treatments have been supportive to me as a whole as she facilitates a space where my body
can let go and TRUST in the process each time. This has helped me endlessly as I am now able to quickly process and cleanse on a day to day, and month to month basis. Prior to Mary's treatments my body was not communicating efficiently and now is.
I highly recommend Mary as a Master in her field who is continually learning herself and is passionate about helping people to live a full life."
TH, Newbury (2019)
~~"I always come away from our sessions feeling so much more relaxed and balanced. The benefits have been significant, overall a feeling of being much more in balance physically and emotionally. I feel much stronger as a result. I appreciate Mary's thoughtfulness and thoroughness, the way she checks constantly to see what my body is telling her and her care in finding the right treatment and responses. Of all the various therapies I have tried, acupuncture with Mary has been the most effective.
Benefits have included the gradual return of some feeling in my feet, greater resilience emotionally and greater ease in riding out some of the challenges life throws at you, improved management of pain in lower back and shoulders … and while it hasn’t gone away, I realise that my dodgy knee troubles me less. I also have more energy. So, it is very positive all around.
The sessions themselves are relaxing. I tend to see things in terms of colours and patterns and I find it interesting to note both colour and physical reaction to the treatments.
Thank you for bringing balance and healing to my busy life. It has, and continues to, make a very positive difference to my life."

"Over a year ago, I went to Mary Chan suffering from severe anxiety and depression, as well as some other digestive and sleep disorders associated with those conditions. I was scared about having needles put into my body (as I was completely new to acupuncture) but felt so desperate to try anything that may work that I swallowed my fear and went.
Nearly a year and a half later, I have Mary to thank for an absolutely incredible experience which I believe has helped me more than the SSRI tablets that I was taking for nine years (Citalopram). I had acupuncture most weeks for six months and now I enjoy an hour’s session every other week. I also proud to think of Mary as my friend.
Mary customised a flexible program for me, made up of a mixture of treatments including tuning forks, Moxibustion and fine-needling. I think I was lucky to have felt the effects from the very first session and I can certainly testify to an impressive improvement in my condition, as part of a multi-approach strategy including walking and counselling.
As for my fear of needles…they are so thin that I do not even feel the vast majority of them! In fact, I usually ask Mary to insert some more because I feel they work so well. I do hope that Mary is able to help you heal yourself too."

"I just want to write a little note to say thank you for all the help & support you've been giving me for the last year. You truly are a miracle worker. Quite honestly you've changed my life for the better and you're still helping me transform into a stronger, happier and healthier person.
I honestly don't know how to thank you enough. I can't believed how much I've changed since last year, it's amazing. I'm so proud of where I am now and I know life will just keep getting better.
I can't really comprehend all the changes you & acupuncture have made in my life. I also don't fully understand how it all works, but that's part of the magic!! You have a wonderful skill, you just seem to always know what to say & how to help - you truly are heaven sent.
I really just wanted to write to give you my heart-felt thanks. Please know I'm so grateful for all you do for me, for all the support and loving energy you give. My life is so much richer because of all you do and the energy you give off, so thank you from the bottom of my heart."LB, Newbury (2018)

"In the past I had acupuncture for a specific immediate symptom. Now, with Mary, it is a way of life. I believe whole-heartedly in her way of healing and maintaining health. I won't ever stop it now.
I feel so relaxed and safe with Mary. I'd trust her with anything she does. She is so in tune and aware she often knows what's going on in my body before I've said anything. I feel so lucky to have found Mary!"LP, Newbury (2017)

"Mary gave me an 'emergency' acupuncture treatment whilst I was suffering from laryngitis, I'd completely lost my voice. Having never had acupuncture before I didn't know what to expect but I didn't even feel the needles go in!
The treatment worked wonders, by that evening I was already feeling an improvement and by the next day my voice had returned. I couldn't recommend Mary more highly, she made me feel very at ease during the treatment and most importantly it worked!"
LB, Thatcham (2017)

"After three sessions of treatment from Mary, the irritated nerve in my spine was calm and I was soon back to full fitness. The treatment (Lower Back Pain) was 100% effective and I have had no recurrence of the symptoms.
Impressed by the whole body approach of the treatment and by Mary’s confident and caring manner, I am happy to recommend Mary Chan Classical Acupuncture."
FC, Newbury (2016)~~
"I came to see Mary for help with stomach acid, and whilst I had had acupuncture before and found it really helped I do have a sensitive body and I found that for me the tuning forks were a godsend. It is a very gentle way of receiving healing energies without the needles but with exactly the same effect. I would thoroughly recommend this method and Mary for her gentle and knowledgeable treatments."
LR, Reading (2016)~~
"The key reason for seeking Acupuncture treatment was because a doctor advised me that nothing could be done to relieve arthritis in my wrists. Amazingly, the pain & discomfort has reduced to less than 5% - most of the time I do not have any pain at all, the outcome has exceed all my expectations!
Mary took time to understand why I came for the treatment and made sure I was aware of what was happening each step of the way. It was easy to build a great rapport with her that made me feel comfortable to discuss my emotions as well as physical ailments."

Frequently asked questions
What happens when you come for treatment?
The first session will take 1 hour, which includes a detailed consultation of your health, lifestyle and symptoms. During the consultation, Mary will also take your pulses on both wrists, look at your tongue, and palpate any areas of tenderness or pain. You will also receive a preliminary treatment in this initial consultation.
Follow up treatments last 45 minutes. Each treatment is unique to you and points are carefully chosen to suit the best treatment care.
It is best if you do not come to your appointment on an empty stomach. You should have something to eat beforehand. It does not have to be a full meal, it can be something small such as a piece of fruit. What does it feel like?
The needles used are extremely fine (about the width of two fine head hairs), sterile and disposable. In most cases there is a very slight “prick” as the needle enters the skin, sometimes followed by a tingling or numbness as it reaches the acupuncture point. The sensation is quite acceptable and only lasts 1-2 seconds. Responses to treatment can sometimes include tiredness, and very occasionally minor bruising may occur. All such reactions are short-lived.
Is it safe?
Chinese Medicine offers a natural, efficient and promising alternative medical discipline. Acupuncture with a trained and fully qualified practitioner is one of the safest forms of healthcare. It can be used effectively alongside conventional medicine and is suitable for people of all ages, including pregnant women and children.
How many sessions will I need?
Every individual is unique and response varies. Weekly treatments are normal to begin with, reducing in frequency as your body responds. The effect is usually felt within five or six treatments. Occasionally just one or two treatments are sufficient.
Should my doctor know?
If you have been prescribed medication we recommend you tell your doctor that you plan to have acupuncture. Do not stop taking your medication. You should tell your acupuncturist about any medication and supplements you are taking. Acupuncturists are trained to recognise potentially serious underlying health conditions and will refer you to your GP if they consider it appropriate.
Will my health insurance pay for acupuncture?
Most health insurance policies cover the cost of treatments with licensed acupuncturists. You should check with your insurer directly.
